FAQ

Apprenticeship frequently asked questions
General Queries
When do applications open?
Applications for our apprenticeship programmes will open on 9th of November. Keep an eye on our vacancies page for the latest opportunities, application deadlines and programme dates.
When is the application deadline?
Applications close on Friday 18 December 2026. We recommend applying early and giving yourself enough time to complete each part of the application.
Can I apply if I already have a qualification in the same field as the apprenticeship I’m interested in?
Possibly. Having a previous qualification does not automatically prevent you from applying for an apprenticeship. However, apprenticeship funding rules require the programme to help you develop substantial new knowledge, skills and behaviours that go beyond those covered by your existing qualifications.
Your eligibility will depend on the level and content of your previous qualification and how closely it relates to the apprenticeship you’re applying for. For example, if you already hold a degree in Data Science, you might not be eligible for a Level 4 Data apprenticeship because the apprenticeship might not provide enough new learning.
As part of the enrolment process, our training provider will assess your prior qualifications and experience to determine whether you meet the funding and eligibility requirements. If you’re unsure whether your previous studies could affect your eligibility, we encourage you to apply and we’ll review your circumstances with you.
Can I apply if I’m changing careers?
Yes. Our apprenticeships are not only for school or college leavers. Whether you’re taking your first step into work or looking to move your career in a new direction, we’re interested in your potential and what you’re keen to learn.
The Application Process
What does the application process involve?
Our application process includes an online application, an online assessment, a future talent discovery day for shortlisted candidates, and an assessment centre.
Each stage gives you the chance to show us your strengths and potential. It also gives you the opportunity to learn more about Ofcom and decide whether Ofcom feels like the right fit for you.
Will everyone be invited to the future talent discovery day?
No. only candidates who are shortlisted following the online assessment will be invited.
The day will help you learn more about the role and team, build your interview skills and hear from former apprentices. It will also include a short assessment activity.
Will the assessment centre be held online or in person?
Our assessment centres are usually held in person at one of our offices during the spring. If you’re invited to attend, we’ll provide full details about the location, timings and what to expect.
Can I request a reasonable adjustment?
Yes. We want everyone to have a fair opportunity to show their potential. If you need a reasonable adjustment or accessibility support at any stage, please let our recruitment team know.
We’ll talk to you about what would help and work with you to put the right support in place. You can ask for an adjustment when you apply or at any point during the process.
Can I use AI to help with my application?
You can use AI tools to check spelling and grammar, improve the clarity of your application, research Ofcom and practise interview questions.
However, AI must not be used to make up or exaggerate your experience, complete assessments for you or produce work that you submit as your own. Anything you submit should be an honest reflection of your skills, experience and potential.
About The Apprenticeship Programme
When does the apprenticeship programme start?
Our apprenticeship programme starts in September of each year. We’ll confirm the exact start date with successful candidates before they join.
How long do apprenticeships usually last?
The length of your apprenticeship will depend on the role, qualification and apprenticeship level. Most programmes last between two to four years, and the full programme length will be stated in each job description.
What apprenticeship levels are offered?
We offer apprenticeships at levels 3-6. The level and qualification will depend on the role, so check the job description for full details before applying.
Which locations offer apprenticeship roles?
Our apprenticeship roles might be available in different Ofcom locations, depending on the programme. You’ll find the location for each opportunity in the job description, so check this before applying.
How often will I be expected to attend the office?
We support hybrid working and ask our early careers colleagues to attend the office at least two days a week. This gives you time to work alongside your team, build relationships and make the most of your experience at Ofcom.
Any role-specific working arrangements will be explained in the job description and discussed with you when you join.
Training and Qualifications
Are my training and qualification costs fully funded?
Yes. Ofcom will fully fund the training and qualification associated with your apprenticeship, which will be delivered by a specialist training provider. You will not be expected to contribute towards the cost of your apprenticeship training.
How much time is set aside for off-the-job training?
Twenty per cent of your working time will be dedicated to off-the-job learning. This is protected time set aside for training and development and could include workshops, online learning, projects, mentoring, study time and assignments linked to your apprenticeship.
Your training schedule will be agreed between you, Ofcom and your training provider when you begin the programme.
